Cover thumbnail for Golden Gate Park Golden Gate Park

Well known for its expansive natural beauty, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is also home to a significant number of the city’s municipal collection of public art and monuments. Of the 45 sculptures located throughout the park, over half are concentrated in the Music Concourse, an open area bordered by the new California Academy of Sciences and the de Young museum. Originally built for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, this San Francisco landmark forms the cultural and historic heart of the park and serves as a free outdoor museum open to the public year-round. The Concourse’s monuments collectively span two centuries and stand as permanent testament to the origins of our city and the diverse histories that continue to shape it today.
